WORSHIP & ISLAMIC LEARNING
Remembrance. Faithfulness. Reflection.
Imam Husayn ibn Ali, peace be upon him, was the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the son of Ali and Fatimah. Revered as the third Imam in Twelver Shia Islam, his life and the remembrance of Karbala hold a central place in this religious tradition.
Imam Husayn’s life belongs within the history of the Ahl al-Bayt. His relationship to Prophet Muhammad, his parents Ali and Fatimah, and his brother Hasan provides a starting point for learning about him. Al-Islam.org’s biographical entry identifies his death in 61 AH / 680 CE.
Muharram, Ashura, Arba‘in, majlis and ziyarat are among the subjects brought together in Al-Islam.org’s Karbala collection. A majlis is a gathering; in this context it provides a setting for religious remembrance and learning. Ask a local center about its current gatherings and the format it follows.
The Karbala collection links authored works, including Ibrahim Ayati’s A Probe into the History of Ashura. Read an identified historical account before passing on a story or a quotation. Reverence is best served by care with the words we attribute to revered people.
