What Should a Mutual Aid Request Explain?

A clear request names the practical need, useful timing, constraints, and a safe way to make contact.

A reading for study & reflection · Sources & further reading

Name the task or item

Explain what would help in specific terms. “A ride to the clinic on Friday morning” gives volunteers more useful information than “transport help,” while “two bags of pantry staples” is clearer than “anything you can spare.” Include quantity, size, or task details when they affect whether someone can respond. A request should not make a person prove that they deserve assistance. Share only enough context to help a volunteer understand and meet the request.

Give a useful time window

State when the support is needed and whether another time could work. “By Wednesday afternoon” helps a volunteer decide whether an offer is realistic. If the need is urgent, explain the deadline plainly and avoid implying that a response is guaranteed. For ongoing needs, specify a manageable period, such as weekly help through the end of the month, then review whether the arrangement should continue. Clear timing prevents well-meaning people from making an offer that arrives too late to be useful.

Include constraints and contact preferences

Mention relevant practical constraints, such as a step-free handoff, a food allergy, a limited pickup window, or a preference for text rather than phone calls. Do not publish a home address or sensitive personal details in a public post. A coordinator can receive initial replies and share necessary information only with the volunteer who has agreed to help. If another person may coordinate on the requester’s behalf, say how that person can be reached and confirm that the arrangement is welcome.

Set expectations honestly

Explain whether the request is open, partly met, or already covered, and update the post when circumstances change. Thank people without promising repayment or making them responsible for solving a larger problem. The Quran 2:177 describes giving to people in need among several dimensions of righteousness. A request can reflect that spirit of care by being honest and dignified, without requiring a recipient to cite religious reasons or disclose a personal story. For questions of religious interpretation or obligation, a qualified scholar is the appropriate guide.
