What Is a Respectful Way to Share Someone's Need for Assistance?

Share a request for help only with permission, use the minimum details needed, and let the person guide the audience and wording.

Ask before passing the request along

A request for assistance does not automatically mean that someone wants their circumstances shared with a wider group. Before forwarding a message, posting a notice, or contacting volunteers, ask the person what they are comfortable sharing and with whom. They may welcome help from a few trusted people but not a public appeal.

Make the choice concrete: “Would you like me to ask the meal team for one delivery this week? I can share only the preferred day and food needs.” If the person says no, do not seek another route to share the details. You can still offer support directly within the boundaries they set.

Use only the details needed

Once permission is clear, include the logistics that helpers need to act. A meal request may need a delivery window, dietary preferences, and a contact for coordination. It rarely requires a diagnosis, family history, or explanation of how the need arose. Check that the details are accurate and ask whether the person wants their name included.

For example, a private note to two volunteers could say that a meal is needed on Friday, specify ingredients to avoid, and identify the coordinator. A public message about the same task might simply say that a volunteer is needed for a Friday meal delivery, with the coordinator’s contact. The right amount of information depends on the audience and consent given.

Choose a limited channel and contact

Use a channel suited to the task. A private message to the people assigned to help is different from a group post that may be forwarded. Identify one coordinator who can answer questions, update the person, and prevent volunteers from contacting them unexpectedly. Tell helpers not to repost the request or reuse information for another purpose.

If the person wants to revise or withdraw the request, make it easy to do so. The coordinator can notify assigned helpers that the plan has changed without repeating the original private details.

Respect the person beyond the announcement

Quran 5:8 emphasizes justice in a passage addressed to believers; readers may study its wording and context through translation and qualified instruction. In practical community care, a person’s dignity includes having a say in how their situation is described. Avoid language that turns someone into a public example or implies that accepting help is owed.

A respectful share is specific, limited, and authorized. It helps the intended volunteers respond while preserving the person’s privacy, choices, and ability to decide what happens next.
